Using Games in Maths- Classroom Evaluation of Tuesday 16 June 2015

Class Evaluation

I personally found using games in teaching mathematics very fascinating. Firstly it lets the child do what he is really good at-play. Also in a game you win or you lose. In a maths game you lose when you fail to master a concept and therefore play the game again until you win and master the concept simultaneously. 

Although winning does not always mean that you have mastered the concept, it can also be that you did some good guess work ! This another competency in mathematics, known as Trial and error.

An example being a game called Puppy pull. The game involves students to use their knowledge of converting  Mixed Numbers to decimals.

Students were asked to come on board and answer the question by choosing the right option. After playing the game for one session with two groups, I observed the following.

• One student would solve and others would usually help him out. This encourages peer learning.
• Some students were only using their guesswork. The game involves using the knowledge of how to convert mixed numbers in decimals which I covered in my last so I was able to evaluate who is learning and who is not.
• May be students could Bring their own device (BYOD) and play the game at their own pace or play a multiplayer game against each other.

In conclusion I could say games do have a positive impact in enhancing child`s ability to understand concepts.
